The Lubbock Cooper Pirates put their undefeated district record on the line this week against the Wichita Falls High Coyotes.

Lubbock Cooper stays unbeaten in district play

The Pirates started the scoring off with a 3-yard run from running back, Judge Thomason giving the Pirates an early 7-0 lead. Lubbock Cooper’s defense then forced a punt on the Coyotes offense on the next drive.

The Pirates’ offense drove the ball inside of the Coyotes’ 30-yard line but were forced to kick a 44-yard field goal from sophomore, Teagen Vann making the ball game a 10-0 score late in the 1st quarter.

Coopers’ defense got an interception on the very first play of the 2nd quarter, setting up their offense in good field position. The Pirates’ offense capitalized off the turnover and scored on another short run by Thomason, extending the Pirates’ lead to 17-0.

Back and forth scoring

Coyotes’ defensive back, Ivy Kelley got an interception giving their offense some life. Wichita Falls’ offense would take advantage of the turnover and drive it down the field for a score. Quarterback, Bricen Vialpando would connect with his wide receiver, Ke’Ondre Fleeks for a 17-yard score to cut the Pirate’s lead to 10.

On the very next kickoff, Cooper’s special team joined in on the scoring with a long touchdown return by Kyle Lewis making the game 24-7.

The Coyotes’ offense would answer right back with a 31-yard pass from Vialpando to cut the Pirate’s lead back down to 10.

Lubbock Cooper would then answer back as well with a 2-minute offense drill. Kaleb Stripling would run it in for a 3-yard touchdown making the score 31-14 ending the first half.

The Pirates scored on their first offensive drive of the second half with an 8-yard run by Thomason, putting the ball game at a 38-14 score. Cooper’s offense added on two more touchdowns in the game making the score 51-14.

The Coyotes showed some fight and scored on the very last play of the game making the final 51-21

Final Score: Lubbock Cooper 51- Wichita Falls High 21

Lubbock Cooper stays undefeated in district play and will travel to Abilene next Friday to take on the Wylie Bulldogs. Wichita Falls High falls to a 2-6 record and hosts the Plainview Bulldogs next Thursday night.
