The Lubbock Cooper Pirates improve to 2-0 after beating the Lubbock Coronado Mustangs 28-7 in week two of the 2021 football season.
1st half action
Both teams went three and out on their opening possession to start the game. On Cooper’s next possession, they drove down to Coronado’s 10-yard line. Cooper tried a fake field goal attempt but be stopped by Coronado’s defense.
The Pirates’ defense forced the Mustangs’ offense to punt on the next possession. The Pirates then scored on a 7-yard touchdown run by senior running back Judge Thomason putting Cooper up 7-0 midway through the first quarter.
The Pirates defense joined in on the scoring with a 37-yard pick-six from junior defensive back Ju’Raylin Shaw putting the Pirates up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The only score in the second quarter came from the Mustangs’ special teams. The Pirates lined up to punt the ball away, and the snap went over the punter’s head and rolled into the end-zone, and the Mustangs recovering it. The Mustangs were down 14-7 at halftime.
2nd half action
Cooper got the ball to start the second half and scored on a 3-yard touchdown by Thomason and took a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter.
Both of the teams’ defenses held tough as no one scored the rest of the third quarter. The score remained 21-7 in favor of the Pirates.
Cooper scored on their first possession in the fourth quarter. Junior quarterback Holt Gibson found junior wide receiver, Cooper Morris, for a 10-yard touchdown pass putting the pirates up 28-7.
The Mustangs’ offense tried to get one score in late in the game. Junior quarterback Jett Carroll threw a deep pass in the end-zone, but it was intercepted by Cooper’s defensive back Coleman Vaughn and that sealed the game for the Pirates. Carrol has thrown five INTs in two games this season.
Lubbock Cooper will look to stay undefeated as they travel to Wolfforth to take on the Frenship Tigers next Friday night.
