Lubbock Coronado Dominates El Paso Bel Air
The Texas High School football playoffs kicked off this week. All teams have their eyes on one goal, finishing the season at AT&T Stadium in Arlington with a state championship. The Lubbock Coronado Mustangs are one step closer after stomping on the El Paso Bel Air Highlanders.
Coronado comes out on fire
Mustangs’, Ted Gilmore took the opening kickoff return for an 80-yard touchdown to put the Mustangs on the board first. Mustangs’ defense would get a quick three and out to give their offense the ball back. The very first offensive play for the Mustangs’, quarterback Jett Carroll connected with Trevor Stephens for a 40-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead 14-0 early in the 1st quarter.
On the Mustangs’ next possession, Carroll tossed a 10-yard pass to wide receiver Will Boyles for the score adding to their lead. Carroll, this time would then connect with Surreal Garret for a 20-yard passing touchdown.
The Mustangs went to their bag of tricks on their next offensive possession, Carroll tossed a pass to offensive lineman, Karson Young for a 1-yard score. Carroll threw another touchdown pass to Stephens, this one was for a deep 69-yarder. The Mustangs tallied up six touchdowns just in the 1st quarter.
Carroll tossed two more touchdowns in the 2nd quarter, one to Stephens again for 9-yards and the other to Jay’Kel Mccucheon for 40-yards.
Carroll had himself a field day going for 18 completions out of 24 attempts for 360 yards and six touchdowns. All but one yard for the Mustangs’ offense would come off of passes. The Mustangs’ tallied up a total of 361 yards.
2nd half
Coronado added on one more touchdown in the 2nd half and field goal to put their point total at 67.
