No Kennedy Brooks. No Saiid Adebo, no problem as Mansfield thwarted Arlington Bowie 34-14 to capture at least a share in the District 4-6A title.
It was a sluggish start between both teams as the first quarter ended in a scoreless affair with both teams contributing to four fumbles, three lost fumbles and an interception. Mansfield fumbled on their first play from scrimmage and Bowie would fumble two plays later after recovering it.
With both offenses struggling to move the ball Mansfield would elect to attempt a 48-yard field goal that fell short in order to try and get the first points of the game.
The first score of the game would come near the goal line as running back Avery Chatman would run it in with 43 seconds left before the half. That play was set up from a halfback pass from Mansfield’s 36-yard line to have them near the goal line.
Bowie would drive to the Mansfield 28 to set themselves up for a final play attempt before the half. Quarterback Donoven Davenport would throw the ball in the end zone with his receiver in the area, but a Mansfield defender would break it up to end the half with Mansfield leading 7-0.
Mansfield would open up the second half with a 75-yard score from receiver Jackson Gleeson after he caught a short route pass from quarterback Shawn Hartsfield.
Bowie would finally get on the scoreboard down 14-0 in the third when Kobe Daniels hooked up with his quarterback Donoven Davenport for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Heading into the fourth quarter Bowie faced a 14-7 deficit.
From there on Mansfield would turn on the burners on offense to run away with the lead. Shawn Hartsfield would throw a touchdown pass to receiver Derique Ryan followed by two touchdown runs by running back Avery Chatman. Mansfield had a sizable lead in the fourth quarter with a 34-7 score at the 3:34 mark.
Avery Chatman took advantage of his time in the backfield as he finished with 163 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Shawn Hartsfield finished his night with a 139 yard passing performance and two touchdowns.
Mansfield will now head into the Class 6A Division II playoffs as the No.1 seed.
