Behind a relentless defense and a poised, efficient offensive performance, the Muenster Hornets shut out Shiner 28-0 at AT&T Stadium to claim their second straight Class 2A Division II state championship, completing a dominant title defense on the sport’s biggest stage.
From the opening possession, it was clear Muenster was in control. An early turnover gave the Hornets a short field, and quarterback Casen Carney wasted little time capitalizing. Carney accounted for two touchdowns in the first quarter alone, pushing Muenster to a 14-0 lead and immediately putting pressure on a Shiner offense that had been explosive all season.
That pressure never eased.
Muenster’s defense turned in a clinic, swarming the ball, winning the line of scrimmage, and keeping Shiner off rhythm from start to finish. The Comanches entered the game at 15-0, but struggled to find space or sustain drives against a Hornet unit that tackled cleanly and played downhill all afternoon.
Carney continued to shine in the second quarter, adding another touchdown to make it 21-0 at halftime. By then, the Hornets had already dictated the pace and tempo, controlling possession and forcing Shiner to play from behind in unfamiliar territory.
Any hopes of a Shiner comeback faded early in the third quarter when Carney connected with Garrett Hess for a 12-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 28-0. From there, Muenster leaned on its offensive line and running game, bleeding the clock and closing the door.
Carney finished an outstanding performance completing 9 of 10 passes for 162 yards and three passing touchdowns, while adding 79 rushing yards and a score on the ground. Hess was his top target, hauling in four catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Rhett Walterscheid anchored a front that lived in the Shiner backfield, earning Defensive MVP honors.
Shiner fought to the final whistle, but the Hornets never cracked. When the clock hit zero, Muenster had secured another championship and another statement.
Two years. Two titles. And a defense that left no doubt.
