The area round of the Texas High School Football playoffs continued Friday, on a chilly night in Crowley, as the Odessa Permian Panthers (8-3) took on the North Crowley Panthers (11-0).
Odessa Permian came into the playoffs on a three-game losing streak. Still, she had a resounding win over El Paso Eastlake in the bi-district round, giving them some momentum going into this matchup. On the other side was a North Crowley team with one of the most dynamic offenses in the state. North Crowley got off to a slow start last week but eventually pulled away from Byron Nelson. They wanted to continue their dominant 2024 run, hoping to get to AT&T Stadium in December.
Odessa Permian at North Crowley Game Recap
This one was all North Crowley from the start of the game. North Crowley received the ball, and three plays later, they were in the endzone, as North Texas commit Chris Jimerson connected with Quentin Gibson for a five-yard touchdown. The PAT was no good. On the ensuing Permian drive, the pass was picked off by Elijajuan Houston and returned for a pick-six, making it 14-0 North Crowley less than two minutes into the game.
Permian turned the ball over on downs on their next drive. On the next play, Jimerson hit Gibson on a screen pass, who scampered 80 yards to the house for the touchdown. Following a Permian punt, North Crowley found the endzone again, as SMU commit Daniel Bray ran up the middle for an eight-yard touchdown, making it 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.
On the opening play of the second quarter, North Crowley extended their lead, as Jimerson hit Kevin Moore in the corner of the endzone for a six-yard touchdown. Permian fumbled on their next drive, and Jimerson capitalized with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Gibson. The score stood at 42-0 until late in the half when UNLV commit Cornelius Warren III made a 25-yard touchdown run. At the half, North Crowley led 49-0.
Coming out of the half, Jimerson and Gibson connected for their fourth touchdown of the game, putting any chance of a comeback out of reach. Permian got on the board twice late in the game, but the final score was 72-14.
North Crowley continues its impressive 2024 season and will face fellow undefeated Coppell in the regional semifinals next week.
