A tragic series of events has rocked the North Shore High School football program this summer, involving two standout players, one now facing serious criminal charges, the other fatally shot.
On July 6, 17-year-old Chace Zion Wade Calicut, a four-star recruit and University of Georgia commit, was allegedly involved in a road rage incident in north Harris County. According to court documents, Calicut chased and confronted two fellow teens from school in a Cadillac Escalade, while his passenger, teammate Isaiah Phillip, allegedly brandished a handgun and fired at their vehicle. No one was injured, but both Calicut and Phillip were later charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Just two weeks later, tragedy escalated.
Phillip was shot and killed on July 19 at a crowded pool party on Liberty River Drive. Harris County deputies found him with multiple gunshot wounds, and he later died at the hospital. Several other teens were reportedly injured in the chaos as partygoers fled. Authorities have not confirmed a connection between the pool party shooting and the earlier road rage incident. No arrests have been announced.
Calicut remains in jail after a judge increased his bond to $150,000. His promising football career, including an offer from Georgia, is now on hold amid the ongoing legal process. The UGA Athletics Department issued a statement noting NCAA restrictions on public comments about high school recruits who haven’t signed letters of intent.
The North Shore community continues to grapple with the fallout, a promising season overshadowed by gun violence, legal trouble, and loss.
Anyone with information about either incident is encouraged to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
