The game of the week featuring two of the top teams in their class in the state did not end up being close.
Final Score: North Shore Mustangs 49 – Manvel Mavericks 14
North Shore came in as Max Preps #2 team in the country and they showed why as they easily beat who DCTF has ranked as the #5 team in 5A, the Manvel Mavericks.
This is the performance we’ve been waiting to see to lift the Mustangs to #1 in our rankings. Their opening win against Shadow Creek, 38-21 was impressive, though Shadow Creek went on to lose their next game as well. They then beat Klein Collins 30-23 and Willis 48-21. All impressive wins. Though, we had the Austin Westlake Chaparrals as having the better start to the season. With this dominant win over a solid team, the Mustangs will find their way atop our list and most state rankings.
North Shore jumped out to a 14 point lead but Manvel fought back scoring a touchdown to cut it to 14-7. Then, the play of the game happened. Texas A&M commit, Shadrach Banks, picked up a bobbled snap, ran through the middle, hurdled a defender at midfield, and took it to the endzone for a 55-yard touchdown run. The Mustangs standout wide-receiver, who is bouncing back from a year of injuries, looked outstanding and was featured at receiver, in the backfield, and even at quarterback in a wildcat like formation. North Shore did not look back from there. Their defense keeps improving each week and held Manvel to just one more score as the Mustangs cruised to a 49-14 win.
North Shore improved to 4-0. The schedule only gets tougher from here, but that is nothing new for the back-to-back state champions, who are now 35-1 over the last three seasons. They face a few Top 25 teams on their schedule, but next up is Beaumont West Brook. The Bruins are coming off a 28-51 loss last night to Longview and are 1-2 on the season. North Shore will be heavily favored against the Bruins and will be favored in every game on their schedule.
Manvel is now 2-1. They only have 6 games on their regular-season schedule. They opened the season with a 53-20 win over Crosby, then a 35-13 win over Alief Taylor. They’ll look to improve to 3-1 next week against Angleton. The Angleton Wildcats are 3-0, with a win on October 10th over Lamar Consolidated 22-20.
