NYOS (Not Your Ordinary School) Charter went 7-4 in 2016 and made the playoffs and appeared in the division two bracket of the TAIAO (Texas Association of Independent Athletics Organization).
In the quarterfinals, NYOS prevailed by one point over CHANT HomeSchool. They had what seemed to be a comfortable lead of 46-33 after three quarters. The Chargers rallied with 26 points in the fourth quarter, but NYOS held them off just enough with 14 points to win 60-59.
They didn’t worry about protecting a lead in the semifinals because they lost to Stephenville FAITH 80-44. NYOS lost to Stephenville FAITH in a similar fashion a month prior in their last game of the regular season. They also lost to Bastrop Tribe Consolidated and FEAST HomeSchool.
NYOS won six of their first seven games with wins over Annapolis Christian Academy, Corpus Christi WINGS HomeSchool, Exel HomeSchool, Victoria Cobra HomeSchool and Johnson County Sports Association. Their best win came against Victory and Praise Christian Academy, who was 8-3. They won in overtime 62-60.
Key Returners
Damon Dunn, Chris Moncivais, Jalen Sears, Adom Smith
Dunn was the most utilized receiver with 45 catches, 1,222 receiving yards and 18 touchdown catches compared to Sears, who was tied for second on the team with 12 catches. Dunn was also second in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Dunn led the team with 30 touchdowns. Defensively, Dunn was third in total tackles, second in interceptions and tied for the most passes. Dunn had three rushing touchdowns, two touchdown catches and 260 all purpose yards against the Sharks.
Moncivais played in just five games, but he was one of the best defensive players on the team. He had 39 total tackles, five tackles for loss, two interceptions and averaged 7.8 tackles per game, which was second on the team. Moncivais had 16 tackles in the playoff win over the Chargers.
Sears was third on the team in all purpose yards by being second in receiving yards and third in rushing yards. He was also third on the team in touchdowns with 11. He was valuable as a guard with 14 pancake blocks and helped a rushing attack average 10.8 yards per carry and 199.9 yards per game.
Smith was NYOS’ top defensive stopper with 79 total tackles and nine tackles for loss.
Key Returners
Demitri Zapata, Victor Mendoza
Zapata and Mendoza will both return for a team that loves to rush the passer and had 21 sacks last season. Zapata had six sacks and nine tackles for loss and Mendoza had four sacks and eight tackles for loss along with four fumble recoveries.
The Verdict
NYOS will have some personnel losses, particularly Dunn, which will be the toughest loss to replace. However, they seem more than capable of dealing with that. Quarterback Casey Dufner will be a junior next season, but he’s already a bona fide star who could still be improving. He had 2,038 passing yards and 33 touchdown passes and 1,148 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns as a sophomore. He also had four interceptions and was second on the team in tackles. The defense will have talented, experienced pass rushers and other players, who should improve. NYOS was a solid team that will be better, but whether some of their young offensive skill players emerge is what could put them over the top.
