One of the top coaches in 3A is making the jump to 5A, calling it “one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make.” Odem head coach A.J. Martinez was named the next head coach and athletic director at Corpus Christi Carroll.

The move was first reported by KIII in Corpus Christi.

Martinez spent six seasons at Odem, compiling a record of 53-21 and a playoff appearance in every season during his tenure. The Owls advanced to the regional semifinals of the Class 3A Division II playoffs this season before being eliminated by state finalist Boling. Martinez led the Owls to a regional final appearance in 2014.

The new Tiger head coach told KIII, “Carroll is one of the premiere jobs in CC, and when the opportunity came up at a great 5A school, it was too good to pass up. The pressure and expectations are there, and that’s part of the reason I’m going. It gives you extra motivation to prove people right or prove them wrong.”

Martinez takes over a Tiger program that finished 5-5 during the regular season before falling in the bi-district round to Eagle Pass Winn in the Class 5A Division I playoffs.
