Patrick Mahomes Wins the TXHSFB QB BOWL
If Super Bowl LVII was a movie script, the writer would have been from Texas.
Two former Texas high school quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts from Channelview, and Patrick Mahomes from Whitehouse, battled it out in the Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.
Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs had 4 players that played high school football in Texas on their roster:
Eagles from Texas
Jalen Hurts, Channel View
Lane Johnson, Groveton
Milton Williams, Crowley
Kyron Johnson, Arlington Lamar
Chiefs from Texas
Patrick Mahomes, Whitehouse
Nick Bolton, Frisco Lone Star
Shane Buechele, Arlington Lamar
Ronald Jones II, McKinney North
In the first half, TXHSB alums Jalen Hurts for the Eagles, and Nick Bolton for the Chiefs made the biggest plays. Hurts had the Eagles offense moving in the first half. He scored the opening touchdown on a 1 yard run in the first quarter and added 2 more first-half touchdowns with a 45-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown and another touchdown run.
The biggest play in the first half for the Chiefs was made by former Frisco Lone Star linebacker, Nick Bolton. Bolton picked up a fumble from Hurts in the second quarter and ran 36 yards for a touchdown. Later in the game, he had another scoop and score that was called back because of a penalty. He finished with 9 tackles.
Mahomes did not have good stats in the first half, limited by the Eagles dominating the time of possession. However, he could not be stopped in the second half. The former Whitehouse QB led the Chiefs to 3 second-half touchdowns, picking up his 2nd and 3rd touchdown passes of the game. He helped the Chiefs take control of the game, but Hurts battled back.
Hurts led the eagles on a 4-minute scoring drive late in the 4th, capping it off with a two-yard touchdown run. It was the 3rd rushing touchdown of the game for Hurts, tying an NFL record for most rushing touchdowns in a Super Bowl. He also added a 2-yard run for the two-point conversion.
Hurts shined bright, with 304 yards passing, 70 yards rushing, and 4 total touchdowns. However, in the end, the NFL MVP, Patrick Mahomes, drove his team to the winning score. Mahomes led the Chiefs on a 5-minute drive, capped off by a Harrison Butker 27-yard go-ahead field goal, running all but 7 seconds off the clock.
The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII, 38-35. Patrick Mahomes got his second Super Bowl, and second Super Bowl MVP. Mahomes won the battle of former TXHSFB QBs, but both quarterbacks showed their greatness and represented the Lone Star State well.
