The Odessa Permian Panthers squeaked past San Angelo Central 31-29 in a thrilling contest Friday night at San Angelo Stadium. Trailing 23-14 after halftime, the Panthers switched to a triple-option offense, sparking a 17-point surge. Running back Gavin Black was unstoppable, rushing for 225 yards and two touchdowns.
San Angelo’s Christian English kept the Bobcats close, scoring on a 74-yard run late in the fourth quarter. However, the two-point conversion failed, leaving Permian ahead. The Panthers sealed the victory by recovering an onside kick and running out the clock by converting a key third down.
Permian Quarterback Jakob Garcia threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns, while English led Central with 185 rushing yards and two total touchdowns. Permian now moves to 7-0 and faces Midland Legacy next. Midland Legacy is 2-5, coming off of a tough 48-51 loss to Frenship. With this loss, San Angelo Central fell to 3-4 and will face the 5-2 Midland Bulldogs next.
