After 39 years, Gerald Brence announced last November that at the end of 2019 he would be retiring from the school district, stating he would be taking a job to work as a representative for EliteX 360 — an injury preventative business — and that Plano ISD had not yet decided on a replacement for its athletic director position.
Exactly one month to the day since launching a search to fill the role, PISD announced the hiring of Jeff Smith as their next athletic director Tuesday evening.
Matt Welch, of the Plano Star Courier, reported the news.
Smith was hired as McKinney’s head coach in 2010 after being the defensive coordinator at Lake Highlands. In 2017, the Lions earned their first playoff since 2009 under Smith. In 2018, Smith was hired as the assistant athletic director at Prosper ISD.
