Recruit Analysis – Former Lake Travis TE Cade Brewer

The most surprising thing I found when studying Cade Brewer was the fact that he is only 3-stars. From the film that I’ve watched, there is no doubt in my mind that Brewer has the “it” factor that is needed for success at the next level. Admittedly, I have little knowledge of how his camp circuit performances have been, this could be a major factor in his 3-star rating.

But I for one think that game performance is the most important metric when evaluating a prospect and on film Brewer truly shines.

With his 6’3” frame and weighing in at around 225lbs. it’s easy to see that Brewer has the size to be a competitive Big 12 TE. And while brewers size is impressive, his ability to move like a much smaller framed Wide Receiver is what makes him truly special. It was fun watching Brewer burn much smaller, and supposedly much more agile DB’s. The crisp way in which he runs his routes, combined with incredibly soft hands and next-level foot speed, makes Cade Brewer a major threat to any defense that he may come across.

Another factor in Brewer’s game that these recruiting databases don’t take into account is the sheer amount of heart the kid has. Brewer plays the game with a warrior’s heart. He takes plays that are seemingly dead and makes something out of them. Cade simply finds a way to make things work. Whether that be by stopping on a dime to cut a play all the way back across the field, or by hurdling over a defender standing in-between him and the end zone.

I usually try and include something lackluster about a prospects game in my articles, but with the film made available to me on Brewer, I’m hard-pressed to find many faults. There are a few minor footwork errors in his routes but this is something that is easily coachable at the next level. But that being said Brewer can’t become complacent, for his work has only just begun. It’s far too common to see a once great athlete stagnate in college due to growing complacency in their play.

Overall, I think Coach Meekins should go out and reward himself with some Franklin BBQ for locking down this steal for the University of Texas. Cade Brewer has a bright future ahead of him in Austin. I personally can’t wait to see him develop into the top tier D-1 TE I know he has the potential to be.
