Hurricane warning flags are flying high in Spring, TX as the Klein Cain Hurricanes prepare for another season of Texas high school football. And one player, in particular, will see to it that the Canes improve on their 8-3 record of 2020-WR Matthew Golden.
Golden is a 4-star recruit, according to 247sports. He is a dual-threat player that can affect the outcome of a game from his wide receiver position and as a kick returner.
In 2020, he was named the district 15-6A Special Teams Player of the Year. In 2019, he earned all-district honors as both a wide receiver and a kick returner. That season he caught 50 balls for 799 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Last season, Golden posted three games of over 100 yards receiving:
- 5 catches for 194 yards and a TD vs Bridgeland.
- 7 catches for 164 yards and a TD vs Tomball Memorial; also had a rushing TD.
- 6 catches for 237 yards and 2 TDs vs Foster, avg 39 yards per catch.
Golden has 21 scholarship offers, including such schools as:
- TCU
- Arkansas
- Cincinnati
- Louisiana
- Tech
- Pitt
- Miss
- Wisconsin
He is also a standout track athlete for the Hurricanes. This past spring, he ran a 10.9 in the 100 meters and posted a long jump of 21-8.5 feet.
Golden should certainly be the focus of the offense this season since RB Jaydon Blue decided to opt-out of his senior year of high school. Golden will be catching more of QB Carson Roper’s passes (1802 passing yards and 13 TDs in 2020).
The ‘Canes open their season against Cypress-Bridgeland Saturday, August 28 at 8 pm. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
Bridgeland is led by the #2 QB prospect in the country Conner Weigman. Weigman passed for 3803 yards and 42 touchdowns last season and led the Bears to a 49-42 win over Klein Cain in the 2020 season opener.
