Ricky Meeks didn’t need much of an introduction at Thursday night’s meet and greet in Henderson. The new athletic director and head football coach was already a familiar face.
In 2010, Meeks was an assistant coach who helped guide Henderson to a state title. His father, the legendary Dickey Meeks, was the head coach.
A Familiar Name With Deep Roots
For Meeks, Henderson is personal. He played here, coached here, and won big here.
“Things he said go through my head every day,” Meeks said of his dad. “Sometimes I smile, sometimes I say, ‘Dang, he was right.’ He was very wise.”
This move isn’t just a career step. It’s a homecoming.
From Center to Center Stage
Meeks spent the last few seasons at Center High School as AD and head coach. Now, he takes over for Clay Baker, who resigned in December.
“Coaching under my dad taught me a lot—but leading a program on my own showed me even more,” Meeks said. “Now, I get to bring it all back to where it started.”
Lions Football: Past, Present, and Future
The 2010 title is a proud memory, but Meeks is focused on building something new.
“This community loves football. That’s the kind of place you want to be,” he said. “We’re going to compete hard and represent Henderson the right way.”
The crowd Thursday night said it all—Henderson is behind him. Kids asked for photos. Former players gave hugs. Parents offered support. The Meeks name still means a lot here.
A Program in Capable Hands
As athletic director, Meeks is focused on all student-athletes, not just football.
“I want every kid, no matter what sport they play, to feel supported,” he said. “If you wear Henderson across your chest, you matter.”
He brings experience, heart, and a deep understanding of what makes this town special.
A Full-Circle Moment
When Meeks was on the sideline in 2010, he probably didn’t imagine leading the whole program one day. But now he’s back—confident, focused, and all-in.
His dad would be proud.
And so is Henderson.
