Former Copperas Cove Bulldog and Baylor Bear Robert Griffin III – an unsigned free agent — voiced his desire to join the Houston Texans. Griffin – selected No. 2 overall by the Washington Redskins in the 2012 draft –believes he is able to help the team after rookie Deshaun Watson’s season-ending injury.

The Houston Chronicle quoted Griffin as saying, “Deshaun’s an incredible player with a really bright future. I feel like I could help him after my experiences with Washington and Cleveland. I feel like I could help the team. I know a lot of their guys. I think I can do a lot of things they’ve been doing offensively.”

Griffin is a well decorated athlete with accolades that include: NFL Rookie of the Year (2012), Pro Bowl (2012) and a Heisman Trophy winner (2011) as a college freshman. In his inaugural season, Griffin led the Redskins to the top of their division and the team’s first playoff appearance in five years. Unfortunately for the youngster, a late-season knee injury ended his rookie campaign.

The next two seasons, Griffin’s performance lacked and he was plagued with injuries leading to his release by the Redskins. Griffin then spent a year with the Cleveland Browns but after continued issues with injury, his tenure with the Browns’ ended after only one season.

Considering that current Texans’ quarterback Tom Savage has turned in back-to-back dismal starts since taking over for Watson – he’s averaged 220 yards passing and completed less than 50 percent of his passes – Houston may need to seriously contemplate giving Griffin a shot.
