The Sabine Cardinals have found their replacement for former head coach Mark Comfort. Per Hayden Henry of the Longview News-Journal, the Cardinals promoted defensive coordinator Rex Sharp to the head coaching job in a specially-called school board meeting on Friday.
Sharp takes over for Comfort, who spent five of his 40-plus seasons as the Cardinals head coach. Comfort announced his retirement back in January. He went 16-37 in his five-year run at Sabine.
This will be Sharp’s first head coaching position since his time back at Somerville in 2015. That season, he started as defensive coordinator and was later promoted to head coach and athletic coordinator. Sharp resigned after the first game of that season.
This time around, he takes control of a program that has made the playoffs each of the last three years. However, Sharp will look to improve a 2-9 record that the Cardinals finished with in 2016.
