The Seattle Seahawks were in the market for a backup quarterback this offseason up until this past Monday when they signed 28-year old quarterback Austin Davis who spent last season as a backup for the Denver Broncos. Davis had met with the Seahawks as well as former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and Super Bowl XLVII starter Colin Kaepernick.
Ultimately, the Seahawks decided to ink Davis whose NFL experience includes 13 game appearances with 10 starts under his belt and 2,548 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Despite the fact that Davis has not played in a game since 2015, the Seahawks are expecting Davis to compete to be the immediate backup to Russel Wilson.
So where exactly does this leave former TCU star and 2016 signee Trevone Boykin?
Boykin, who went undrafted in 2016 and signed a 3-year deal worth 1.6 million has seen himself land in legal troubles dating back to his time at TCU. Prior to the 2016 Alamo Bowl, Boykin was arrested in San Antonio and charged with assault on a public servant, public intoxication and resisting arrest after getting into a bar fight and punching a patrol officer.
Boykin also found himself on the wrong side of the law back in March when he was involved in a car crash in Dallas that hit seven pedestrians. The driver of the vehicle was charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle while Boykin was arrested on suspicion of marijuana and public intoxication. Boykin was also later arrested for a possible violation of probation back in April.
While his unresolved legal issues still continue to plague him, it’s obvious that Seattle is hoping that the signing of Davis will help Boykin turnaround his off-the-field issues and push him to be the athlete that helped him leave TCU as the career leader in passing yards, completions, and pass attempts as well as the single-season record for passing yards.
Boykin did see some playing time as a rookie where he appeared in five games and went 13-for-18 for 138 passing yards and one touchdown.
Boykin remains a member of the Seattle Seahawks and despite his legal troubles, they still seem keen on developing the 23-year-old quarterback who is set to make $540,000 this season. Seattle expects Boykin to be available for the season and he was also the recipient of some good words by head coach Pete Carroll.
Per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, Carroll states that, “We are going to continue to look for ways to make it more competitive and put us in the best position if it counts and now you need that second guy in there…He did an admirable job last year as a rook doing it, and he’ll be better…We know he can play for us – that’s what we know.”
