Sherman is hitting reset.

The district has decided to move on from head football coach Josh Aleman after three seasons, opening one of the more interesting jobs in North Texas right now.

Aleman, a Sherman alum, finished his tenure with an 8-21 overall record. District play was just as tough, with the Bearcats going 6-18 and missing the playoffs each year.

The results didn’t fully show it, but Sherman wasn’t far off in several spots last season. They battled in multiple games against strong Frisco-area teams and showed flashes of progress, even if the wins didn’t follow.

Still, at some point, results matter.

And with a major transition ahead, Sherman made the call to go in a new direction now instead of waiting.

That timing is what makes this opening especially intriguing.

The Bearcats are about to move into a brand new on-campus stadium this fall. After decades at Bearcat Stadium, the program will finally have a modern home, something that can energize both players and the community.

On top of that, realignment gave Sherman a bit of a fresh start.

They remain in Class 5A Division I, but shift into Region I and a district that many believe is more manageable. It’s the kind of setup where a program can realistically push for a playoff spot with the right pieces in place.

Put those two things together, new stadium and a more favorable district, and suddenly this isn’t just another opening.

It’s an opportunity to build something.

The urgency is real too. Spring workouts are around the corner, and whoever steps in will need to move quickly to establish a system, build relationships, and bring some early momentum.

Sherman also isn’t alone in the coaching market.

Denison, the Bearcats’ longtime rival, is also searching for a new head coach after a recent departure. That adds another layer to this situation, with two nearby programs looking to reset at the same time.

For Sherman, the focus now shifts forward.

The next hire will be about more than just wins. It’s about finding someone who can connect with players, take advantage of the new facilities, and build consistency in a program that hasn’t had a winning season since 2019.

There’s no sugarcoating it. The climb won’t be easy.

But with the right hire, the timing might actually be perfect.
