Skill Players Highlight Cy Woods In 2017

Photo via Tony Gaines, Houston Chronicle

The Cy Woods Wildcats smoked Cy Spring, 69-34, in the district opener for both teams last season. But Cy Woods only won just one more game to finish the year with a 2-8 record.

The Wildcats posted an average of 28 points a game, but they gave up more than 40 per contest. Had they won three of their close losses, the Wildcats would’ve finished the season with an even 5-5 record.

Cy Woods has lots of firepower returning in 2017, which could lead to a playoff return after a two-year absence. The 2014 squad advanced to the third round before falling to Manvel.

Key Losses
LB Cody Eggleston, DB Myles Wilson

Wilson led the team in tackles with 59 while Eggleston had 38. Both were named to the all-district team.

Key Returners
OL Brock Gunderson, RB Jack Barrientez, QB Jacob Kainer

Gunderson (6-4, 250) will only be a junior but already anchors the offensive line. He was a second-team all-district selection last season as a sophomore.

Barrientez and Kainer combined to rush for 1,034 yards and 15 touchdowns. Kainer passed for 1,606 yards and 14 touchdowns and Barrientez led the team with 38 catches, 463 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Verdict
The Wildcats have their leading rushers, receiver and quarterback all back from a 2016 team that averaged 28 points a game in 2016.

The skill players can carry this team while the defense regroups and tries to figure out how to keep teams out of the end zone.
