Sophomore Case Heinrich Suffers Serious Head Injury in Game

Austin Roof Inspection

Abernathy football is breathing a little easier after a weekend of worry.

Sophomore standout Case Heinrich suffered a serious head injury late in the second half of Friday’s 31-28 loss to Littlefield. He went down after a hard collision near midfield, and medical staff quickly rushed to his side as the stadium fell silent.

Heinrich was transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where doctors performed emergency brain surgery to relieve swelling and inserted a shunt and drain tube. He was then placed in a medically induced coma to reduce pressure and give his brain time to heal.

By Monday, signs of progress brought hope. Case’s father, Jon David Heinrich, shared that an MRI showed reduced swelling and doctors had begun easing sedation. Case opened his eyes and squeezed the hands of family members, bringing encouraging news to a community that had been praying nonstop.

Abernathy ISD is rallying behind the Heinrich family. The school is selling $2 wristbands with Case’s name, jersey No. 7, a football, and a deer at this week’s pep rally and Friday’s game, with proceeds supporting the family.

The small West Texas town continues to send love and prayers as Case recovers in intensive care. While doctors remain cautious, Monday’s update offered the best news yet for a team and town united behind their young star. From Friday’s frightening moments to today’s hopeful steps, Abernathy stands with No. 7.
