Stony Point downs Pflugerville Connally

Stony Point started the season with a 30-6 home-victory over Pflugerville Connally on Thursday night at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Round Rock. Stony Point capitalized on strong second and third quarters to take a big lead in the second half and cruise to a victory.

The two teams traded multiple points through the first quarter, as each team shook off preseason rust in the opening contest for both teams. Stony Point struck on its first drive of the second half when quarterback Tanner Aenchbacher found wide receiver Tyree Thomas for an 11-yard touchdown reception. The two-point conversion was good and Stony Point led, 8-0.

The Tigers doubled its lead before halftime when Aenchbacher completed a 52-yard touchdown pass to Dom Williams. It was a short pass, but Williams out-raced defenders to the end zone. At 16-0 at halftime, Stony Point was in full control. Two touchdown runs by Shapiro King in third quarter busted the game wide open.

Down 30-0 in the fourth quarter, Pflugerville Connally finally scored when Calvin Britton returned a blocked punt for a touchdown. The extra point was no good and the game came to a close with both teams getting backups work on offense and defense.

Stony Point dominated the stat sheet in the same way it dominated the game. The Tigers had 19 first downs, while Pflugerville Connally had just 11. The major difference was on the ground, where Stony Point outrushed the Cougars 168 to 45.

Aenchbacher finished the game 7-of-14 for 121 yards and two touchdowns through the air. He added 52 yards on the ground and hit five different receivers. King had 82 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns on just 12 carries.

For Connally, quarterback Robert Patterson was 14-of-27 for 126 yards. He lost 20 yards on two sacks in the first quarter, but was able to add 13 yards rushing. Thomas led receivers with five catches. Treshon Pickett had three catches for 45 yards in the first half.

Stony Point tries to improve to 2-0 next week with a Thursday trip to Harker Heights. Connally will try to win its first game next Friday at Cedar Creek.
