Surprising Team: From 4-7 in 2019 to 3-0 in 2020

2020 has not been a great year for most, but it is starting to look like a good year for the 5A Division 1 Richland Royals, formerly the Rebels, who just beat Keller Timber Creek, 45-34, to move to 3-0.  A surprising and impressive start for the team that was only able to total 4 wins each of the last two seasons, though they did make a playoff appearance last year and they are looking to build off that.

The Royals opened their season against Fort Worth Haltom, winning 36-3.  They traveled to Fort Worth Paschal, in which they won 53-0. They are averaging 45 points per game while only giving up 12 per game. It is their best start since 2017 in which they started 6-0.

The defense, which was dominent in their first two games, gave up yards and points this week, but the offense kept on rolling.  They were led by Sophomore running back Dominique Johnson who had 4 touchdowns. Timber Creek stayed in it as quarterback Jacob Porter led some impressive touchdown drives. Timber Creek got within a score when Porter hit Lonnie Johnson for a 19 yard touchdown pass. But on the next drive, the Royals converted on two fourth downs, including a fake punt on 4th and 9, and eventually found the endzone to put the game away.

The Royals will host Colleyville Heritage in two weeks. The Heritage Panthers are 1-0 with a 48-24 win over Grapevine, but have not played in two weeks. The Keller Timber Creek falcons are now 1-2.  They travel to face West Mesquite next week. The West Mesquite Wranglers are 0-3. losting this week to Fort Worth Chrisholm Trail, 15-22.
