Texas HS Connection: Week Five’s Top College Players
There was no shortage of late game heroics from former Texas high school stars in college football this past weekend.
Here are eight former Lone Star standouts that made their mark in week five.
Western Kentucky QB Maverick McIvor (San Angelo Central)

McIvor spread the wealth too, connecting with nine different receivers. He’s now completed at least 22 passes in all five of his starts for Western Kentucky.
That passing attack has been a big reason the Hilltoppers are currently 4-1 and 2-0 in conference play. They’ll look to protect that unblemished Conference USA record this Friday when they hit the road to face Delaware.
Virginia QB Chandler Morris (Highland Park)

Morris had what ended up being the game-winning touchdown on a four-yard run in double overtime.

Morris finished with five total touchdowns for the second game in a row. Two of those came through the air as he threw for 229 yards. He also added 37 yards and his three other scores on the ground.
Virginia is now ranked for the first time this season at #24. The Cavaliers will hit the road this weekend as they continue their ACC slate against Louisville.
Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson (Lubbock Coronado)

The former Lubbock Coronado quarterback has been on a tear so far this season. This past Saturday, he racked up 393 passing yards and four touchdowns and also added another score on the ground. It was a performance that carried Baylor past Oklahoma State 45-27.
According to Baylor’s athletic communications department, his 73-yard touchdown pass to Kobe Prentice in the third quarter was Baylor’s longest passing play since 2022.

On Monday, Robertson earned the Big 12’s co-Offensive Player of the Week. He’ll look to keep rolling this Saturday when the Bears welcome Kansas State to Waco.
Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby (Lake Dallas)

Sorsby finished 29-43 for 388 yards and two touchdowns. Those 388 passing yards were the second most in a single game for him in his career.
For his efforts, Sorsby earned the Big 12’s Offensive Player of the Week along with Sawyer Robertson. Cincinnati is now 3-1 on the year and 1-0 in Big 12 play. They’ve got a chance to make a big statement this Saturday when #14 Iowa State comes to Ohio at 11 a.m.
Texas Southern RB Athean Renfro (Beaumont United)

Renfro was the bell cow for Texas Southern on Saturday. The Tigers fed him the ball 21 times. He finished with 80 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Texas Southern is now 1-3 and 1-1 in SWAC play. The Tigers will look to build off that victory this Saturday when they welcome Arkansas Pine-Bluff to town.
Stephen F. Austin RB Jerrell Wimbley (C.E. King)

That offensive outburst helped propel the Lumberjacks to a 34-17 win over McNeese State.
According to Stephen F. Austin’s athletic communications department, Wimbley also passed 2,000 career rushing yards on Saturday. For his efforts, he was named the Southland’s Offensive Player of the Week.
Stephen F. Austin is now 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Lumberjacks will play their first Southland road game this weekend when they square off with Incarnate Word.
Iowa State WR Chase Sowell (Atascocita)

That all changed on Saturday for the former Atascocita wideout. Sowell’s big-play ability was on display as he caught four passes for 146 yards. It was a career high in receiving yardage in a single game for Sowell.
His longest catch came on a 52-yard reception in the third quarter, and he also had a 43-yard catch in the first quarter to set up Iowa State’s first touchdown.
