During his college career, Walker was a three-time All-American and was awarded the Maxwell Award in 1947, which is given to the best all-around college football player in the nation. Throughout his time at SMU, Walker scored a total of 303 points, which included 288 points as a kicker. He set numerous school records and left a lasting impact on the program, leading the Mustangs to two consecutive Southwest Conference championships in 1947 and 1948.

Following his illustrious college career, Doak Walker was drafted by the Boston Yanks in the 1949 NFL Draft. However, he did not play for the team, as it disbanded before the start of the season.
