Texas A&M Puts Together Another Solid Recruiting Class

For the Texas A&M Aggies, recruiting under head coach Kevin Sumlin has been solid, and that continued again this year. Sumlin has put together another class that is in the top half of the top 25, and in the top half of the SEC.

Signees: 9 Early Enrollees, 27 total signees

Rankings Grades:

ESPN: #11 Overall, 5th SEC
247: #12 Overall, 6th SEC
Rivals: #10 Overall, 5th SEC

Best Of The Class:

LB Anthony Hines III, Plano East: The linebacker from Plano East was the highest rated player from the class and comes with all type of hype. “That was a relationship-based recruitment over years, but also, I think his trust and the family’s trust in John Chavis went a long way for Anthony Hines to be here,” Sumlin said about the Hines recruitment during his press conference on Wednesday. Hines also has enrolled early so he can participate in spring practice and tries and get on the field next season.

WR Roshauud Paul, Bremond: Anytime Mr. Football in Texas signs with you, you know you got a good one. Paul, who never lost a game at quarterback at Bremond, will now shift over to wide receiver and can be used all over the field. “We have to figure out where to put him. He’s going to start out on offense. He’s electric. He’s a guy that will benefit by being here early and the ability to get into the offense, go through spring football as he makes the transition to receiver. And we’ll see what happens there.” Sumlin said.

Best Position:

Defensive Line: With defensive line bookends Daeshon Hall and Myles Garrett headed to the NFL, the Aggies needed to replenish up front. They did just that with five signees, including Jayden Peevy from Houston Bellaire. The games are won in the trenches and with two studs going to the NFL, the defensive line was a need and it looks like the Aggies should be able to replace them.

Wide Receiver: Plenty of quality outside led by Christan Kirk and adding Jhamon Ausbon (IMG Academy), Hezekiah Jones (Stafford), Camron Buckley (Cedar Hill) and the aforementioned Roshauud Paul are a solid class. This should give whoever the quarterback is plenty of weapons on the outside and knowing that Sumlin isn’t afraid to play true freshman, some of these players have a good chance of seeing the field early.

Most Important Position:

Quarterback: This has been a problem for the Aggies with the mass exodus of last offseason. Kellen Mond from IMG, and originally from San Antonio, was the third rated dual-threat quarterback in the nation heads to College Station and is an early enrollee. Connor Blumrick (Pearland), another early enrollee, is a pro-style quarterback but can run a little. These two players can shape how this class is seen because of the struggles of the quarterback position ever since Johnny Manziel left for the NFL.

Grade: B+

It’s hard for me to give this class an A when it didn’t crack the top five in the SEC and had an average of 11 in the nation. To me, A’s go to top five classes, but the Aggies have once again put together a solid class and they need to keep developing players like they have in the past. This class comes down to the quarterbacks above.
