This week, two 9-1 teams will meet in just the first round of the Texas High School Football playoffs. Dickinson and Alief Taylor have been two of the best teams in 6A this entire year, featuring lockdown defense and bruising offenses.

Dickinson started off the year strong with wins over George Ranch and Friendswood. They stumbled in the middle of their season, losing to Clear Springs, but found their groove quickly after. They’re a strong 9-1 after facing some good competition in district, and have a recent history of playoff success. Myles Lewis powers the run game, and Byron Broussard, Trevor Harmanson, and A.J. Williams provide the defense. Montel Parker is a dynamic playmaker, expect to see him all over the field for the Gators.

Alief Taylor looked like a lock to go 10-0. They were undefeated heading into a matchup with a struggling (record-wise) George Ranch team, and the Longhorns got the best of them in overtime. When your only loss is to George Ranch in bonus football time, and you have wins over Pearland and Pearland Dawson, you’re looking pretty good. Running back Emon Pought and quarterback Dontay Warren are a lethal combination for the Lions, and defensive end Abraham Adesipe can make plays from sideline to sideline.

I don’t know if it’s amazing or depressing that we get this matchup in the first round. Both of these teams are at least Regional champion caliber, and we’re getting them in the second week of November. Someone’s gotta go home early. Someone’s season will be over. Someone’s football career will end on Saturday.

It’s going to be an all out war, and we can’t wait.
