Frank Broyles: Mentor, Coach, and Sports Icon
John Franklin “Frank” Broyles, a name synonymous with excellence in college athletics, left an indelible mark on the sports world. Known for his unparalleled career as an athlete, coach, athletic administrator, and broadcaster, Coach Broyles’ contributions extended far beyond the football field. His legacy is commemorated through the Broyles Award, which honors the nation’s top assistant football coaches—both in college and high school.
Broyles’ journey began as a standout quarterback at Georgia Tech, but his most significant impact came during his tenure at the University of Arkansas. Over 55 years, he served as head football coach and athletic director, leading the Razorbacks to numerous victories and shaping the future of college sports. His visionary outlook and optimistic spirit propelled Arkansas into national prominence, culminating in a national championship in 1964.
Coach Broyles was an advocate for excellence and renowned for his ability to mentor and develop assistant coaches. Many of his assistants, including Barry Switzer, Joe Gibbs, and Jimmy Johnson, went on to become successful head coaches. This mentorship philosophy underpins the Broyles Award, which started by recognizing collegiate assistant coaches and expanded in 2018 to include high school coaches. The award aims to honor the dedication, hard work, and impact of assistant coaches across the nation.
Coach Broyles’ influence was not confined to the gridiron. In the fourth quarter of his life, he became a passionate advocate for Alzheimer’s care, founding the Broyles Foundation. The foundation offers resources and support to Alzheimer’s caregivers, continuing his legacy of compassion and service.
The Broyles Award highlights the enduring impact of Coach Broyles’ values: leadership, mentorship, and a commitment to excellence. In 2024, Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire presented Legacy High School’s defensive coordinator, Frank Maldonado, with the award for the best assistant coach in Texas high school football.
Frank Broyles’ enduring legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, both on and off the field. His contributions to football, his dedication to mentoring young coaches, and his advocacy work remain inspirational. Today, we celebrate a life lived with passion, purpose, and unparalleled dedication to bettering the world around him.
