Hudl Assist breakdowns will now include offensive formation, opening up a wealth of sortable data.
Coaches from all over the country raved about the ways Hudl Assist helped them last season. Whether it was giving them back personal time or helping them dig deeper for even better insights, Assist was a hit in its initial go-around.
And now we’re taking it up a notch. This season we’re adding some new categories to the breakdown data that will help you uncover even deeper insights: offensive formation, defensive front and blitz. Before that’s put into motion, we wanted to pull back the curtain and explain how these breakdowns are being created.
We’ll start with offensive formation. All you need to do is name the formation – we’ll take care of the rest. Formation is marked before any players move in motion. If there’s no motion, it’s marked right before the snap occurs.
From there, our analysts provide a diagram of each play. Here’s how it’s done:

Your first game is returned within 24 hours. The breakdown includes diagrams of all the formations you used.

You name each formation with your personal terminology.

This information will be included for every game moving forward.

Only when new formations are identified in future games will you be asked to name them. As the season progresses, the number of formations you’ll need to name will decrease and the number of formations filled in by Assist will increase.
You’re now free to sort by formation. Want to see all your clips out of Trips Stack? One click pulls up the entire playlist and allows you to see the data that resulted from those plays. This makes it easier than ever to sort through the data and find the particular plays and stats you need.
A quick pro tip: don’t include strength or backfield in your formation names. That data belongs in the “OFF STR” and “BACKFIELD” columns. Keeping strength such as “left” and “right” and backfield like “gun” and “pistol” out of your formations will give you better reports to use when analyzing your opponents.
