On this week’s episode of the T.J. McAloon Show I speak with my longtime friend, and current Media Professor at Duquesne University, Robert Edward Healy III. Bob used to be an offensive lineman for the school he currently teaches at, so we discussed how being a “locker room cancer” can affect how a team plays. With the recent Hall of Fame snub to former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens, I wanted to get Bob on to talk about what a player like him can do to a team.

Owens has numbers that should get him a bust in Canton next to the other legendary players. He currently ranks in the top-five of most of the wide receiver categories, and was a force when he played. However, constant clashes with his teammates, and staff, and media, gave him a bad rap and nicknames like “Team Obliterator.” With Bob on the show today we were able to discuss how a current player, like Antonio Brown, can take a page out of Owens’ book and steer away from being the center of attention in a circus-like manner.

Bob and I grew up together in Pittsburgh, so the majority of this podcast does use examples of former Steelers, Penguins, or Pirates players. For example we compare Owens to former Pittsburgh Pirates slugger, and MLB Hall of Fame member, Ralph Kiner. Kiner didn’t have the best stats, however, he is enshrined in Cooperstown, NY, because he was friendly with the media, fans, and teammates.
