Huntsville ISD didn’t have to look far to find its next head football coach and athletic director. During a special meeting on March 17, the Board of Trustees officially named Todd Moebes as the new leader of Hornet athletics.
For Moebes, it’s more than just a coaching job—it’s a homecoming.
“Huntsville is home,” Moebes said. “I lived in two places growing up: Katy and Huntsville. It was just a natural place when I saw Coach Southern had retired.”
Moebes steps into the role following Rodney Southern’s retirement, bringing a wealth of experience from Lockhart and Abilene Cooper. Over six seasons at Lockhart, he guided the Lions to three playoff appearances, and before that, he led Abilene Cooper to five regional semifinal runs in seven years.
A Solid Coaching Track Record
Moebes’ 76-75 career record spans 13 seasons as a head coach, with stops at Abilene Cooper (2011-2017) and Lockhart (2018-2024). While at Cooper, he won two district titles and helped build one of West Texas’ more consistent programs.
At Lockhart, he took on the challenge of developing a struggling program, leading them to three playoff trips. He resigned from Lockhart on March 13 before officially taking over at Huntsville.
“We are going to coach our kids hard, and we are going to love them harder,” Moebes said. “Football is hard, life is hard. We have to do hard things to be prepared. I’m looking forward to starting.”
A Program Ready to Compete
Huntsville football has been one of the more consistent programs in 5A-Division II in recent years. The Hornets reached the regional finals in 2023 and advanced to the area playoffs in 2024, falling to eventual state runner-up South Oak Cliff.
With key talent returning, Huntsville enters 2025 as a district co-favorite alongside defending state champion Port Neches-Groves.
Superintendent Scott Sheppard emphasized that Moebes was the right fit to lead the Hornets.
“Everything pointed to Coach Moebes being the right fit for us,” Sheppard said. “We’re excited to see where he takes this program.”
With a strong foundation and a familiar face leading the charge, Huntsville football is set to take its next step.
