Is it Week Ten already? With the season dwindling down, things are all but finished. District titles are still on cusp of being determined and with the playoffs right around the corner teams are eager to solidify their spot.
1. Who decides District 6-5A?
The clash between Aledo (8-0, 5-0) and Justin Northwest (8-0, 5-0) is without a doubt the game to watch in 5A. The No. 3 ranked Aledo is set to travel to Northwest ISD stadium on Friday to take on the Texans. Aledo is the heavy favorite (66-game district winning streak) but Northwest has something to prove—especially after their 1-9 record in 2015. Keep an eye on the quarterback battle. Northwest junior QB Prince Mavula has been outstanding this season, as he’s amassed 2,144 yards passing while throwing for 24 TDs and 3 interceptions.
Aledo senior quarterback Dillon Davis has been just as sharp. Davis has thrown for 1,999 yards passing with 27 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
2. How good is San Benito?
The 8-0 Greyhounds are making waves as they just keep on winning. Head coach Daniel Gomez has the Greyhounds in prime position with an unblemished 5-0 record in District 32-6A. San Benito has two road games remaining on the schedule. The first is tonight against Weslaco and then next week against their rivals Harlingen. The latter is likely to be the tougher of the two matchups but keep an eye on the Greyhounds as they try to prove people wrong.
3. Allen RB Kirby Bennett vs. Plano East LB Anthony Hines
Aside from being a great matchup, Allen Eagles junior running back has added a little more fuel to the fire. Bennett reportedly told EJ Holland of 247sports.com that he was ready to run over Hines—a four-star recruit and No. 2 inside linebacker in the country. Bennett—at 6-foot and 195-pounds—runs bigger than his size. Keep an eye on this to see how it plays out. It will be interesting on that first drive.
4. Elysian Fields at West Rusk
After a dismal 4-6 2015 record, the Elysian Fields Yellowjackets continue to stun fans after their perfect 8-0 start this season. Next up is district opponent West Rusk (7-1, 3-1). For the Raiders, it’s a chance for them to secure a playoff spot in 3A-D2 and potentially make things interesting within the district. Elysian Fields is coming off a 61-14 win last week against Beckville. The Yellowjackets have looked unbeatable this season but West Rusk might be the team to hand them their first loss.
5. Will Euless Trinity Miss the Playoffs?
With a loss by the Trojans on Friday and wins by Flower Mound Marcus and Hebron, it could potentially knock the Trojans from playoff contention and end an 18-year run. After starting the season 4-0, the Trojans have stumbled since. Three losses in the next four weeks have resulted in an unexpected 5-3 record from the perennial power Trinity Trojans. Keep an eye on the score tonight with their game against Flower Mound (3-5, 2-3); it could have huge implications in Texas high school football.
