Before the 2015 college football season, there was a quarterback battle that determined a lot of the future of the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ football program. The struggle was between Patrick Mahomes, the young, dual threat option, and Davis Webb, who fit better in the pro-style precision game.
Both were viable, and both ended up being excellent quarterbacks – even after Mahomes won the job over Webb, who was a captain that year, and Webb transferred to Cal, where he started in the 2016 season. Now, the former teammates are reunited again, in the city of Indianapolis.
Both are at the NFL Combine, and both are in fairly similar situations. Despite a huge class of quarterbacks coming out this year, both are being heralded as under the radar guys who can make a splash. An anonymous league executive said that he thinks Webb will be the best quarterback in the draft, and Mahomes’ howitzer of an arm has him rocketing up draft boards, possible to the first round.
Another thing the two have in common: they both cite their football knowledge as a huge advantage. When asked about his football IQ, Webb said that “every time I walk into an interview, I feel like every coach, coaching staff, and GM has been very impressed.”
During Mahomes’ interview, he took the time to not just talk about his football IQ, but to show it, responding to questions about his skillsets by talking about the “three double cloud” defense that a lot of teams were forced to run against Texas Tech due to their quick passing.
More than anything else though, the two are still each other’s fan, even after turbulent years at Texas Tech that were filled with a lot of offensive excellence but not a lot of wins. When asked about the relationship between him and Mahomes, Davis Webb simply said, “We’re very close. Pat and I are very close today. He was watching my games at Cal and I was watching his games at Texas Tech.”
