Two-Time Defending Champs Go Down in Week 1

insoles to jump higher

Six-Man football was the biggest topic last night in Texas high school football with an upset of the two-time defending State Champion Westbrook Wildcats.  On Thursday at Jaybird Stadium, Knox City triumphed over Westbrook, handing them a 34-24 season-opening loss.

The game started off great for Westbrook. In his inaugural six-man football game, Keegan Gilbreath made an immediate impact. Scoring a touchdown on his very first touch and throwing for another on his first pass, Gilbreath showcased his talent. However, despite his impressive debut, Gilbreath couldn’t secure victory for the Westbrook Wildcats.

After Gilbreath’s initial heroics, including a 31-yard run and a 47-yard pass to Bo Payne, Westbrook encountered a formidable challenge. Knox City’s solid defense capitalized on Westbrook’s physical style, stifling their offensive efforts. The Greyhounds forced the Wildcats into turning the ball over on downs during four of their next six possessions, ultimately stealing the spotlight.

Westbrook will host Jonesboro next week, which should prove to be another tough game. But, we would not count out the Wildcats just yet. We would never bet against Head Coach Homer Matlock; he will have the Wildcats ready for another state title run.

Coming off their big win, Knox City will face Motley County next week. The Matadors of Moutley Country are taking the field to face Valley in their first game of the year at the time of this article.
