ARLINGTON — It’s that time in Texas again to find out who is the best in the state. But among the champions being crowned, and the roar of the crowd and the trophies being hoisted, another piece of history was made Wednesday afternoon at AT&T Stadium.
When Strawn’s Greyhounds lined up for the opening kick in their state title against Balmorhea, Kicker K-Lani Nava became the first female to ever play in a Texas High School Football State Championship game.
The moment came after a Carlos Villanueva 35-yard touchdown run when the Greyhounds lined up for a 2-point kick. When she kicked the ball through the uprights, she became the first female to ever score in a State Title game. Throughout the game she went 9/10 on extra points, earning the TexasHSFootball Fan Vote MVP Award sponsored by VCRNow.

She is one of just four seniors on the Greyhounds football team and she also plays basketball and soccer. She doesn’t know where exactly she will be attending college, but she has expressed interest in being a marine biologist.
“I’m actually surprised, I wasn’t really thinking about it,” Nava said after the game. “I was totally prepared at the beginning of the game for all of it. I was ready.”
Strawn ended up winning their game by a final score of 78-42 with Nava accounting for 18 of the Greyhounds’ points.
As the winner of the MVP award, Nava will receive a commemorative custom MVP football, a full scholarship to the Football University Camp of their choice as well as an image collage.
