In a press conference today at the Texas High School Coaches Association, the UIL announced that two high school games will be broadcasted live this year during the opening Friday of the season.
In a deal with Fox Sports Southwest, the Shallowater at Idalou game, as well as Lake Travis at Converse Judson, will be aired on September 1 as part of an opening season showcase.
Allowing live TV broadcasts of regular season high school football games on Fridays is a first for the UIL. The UIL legislative council had to approve a motion in order to waiver its rule of prohibiting the live broadcast of regular season games on Fridays. However, this waiver only allows for a one-time televised showcase.
When asked about the possibility of allowing the use of televised broadcasts each week of the season in future years, UIL Deputy Director Jamey Harrison said that, “We were very specific in the exception that we asked for from our legislative council that it’s one Friday one year only. But as you can see, it’s generating so much excitement, I can certainly see it being very successful and potentially moving to do the same kind of thing in future years but not necessarily opening up the full season. I think that will happen at some point. I just don’t think we’re there
just yet.”
Game Times:
September 1- Shallowater at Idalou at 6 p.m.
September 1- Lake Travis at Converse Judson at 8:30 p.m.
