UIL Punishes North Shore for Recruiting Violations
UIL announced punishments for the North Shore Mustangs for recruiting violations.
The UIL announced:
Former Galena Park North Shore High School Assistant Football Coach Andrew Cameron was issued a three-year suspension from all UIL activities.
Galena Park North Shore High School Head Football Coach Willie Gaston was issued a two-game suspension to begin at the start of district play for the 2024 Football season for lack of proper oversight of his coaching staff. The committee determined that a coach on Gaston’s staff attempted to recruit student-athletes.
The penalties were for violations of Section 51(a)(8), School District Personnel Violations, and Section 52(b), School Violations. Section 51(a)(8) is recruiting violations and Section 52(b) is “Violations of UIL rules: Failing to comply with the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules, when not in conflict with State Board of Education rules or regulations.”
UIL decided not to punish the team and instead focused their punishment on the former assistant coach Andrew Cameron and, to a lesser extent, Head Coach Willie Gaston. All North Shore wins will remain official and the Mustangs will be fully eligible for the 2024-25 playoffs.
