A violent wedge tornado struck Gordon, Texas, a few months ago, inflicting widespread devastation across the town and striking Gordon ISD’s athletic facilities. The powerful twister completely flattened the football and baseball fields, shredded the gym roof, and destroyed the weight room and equipment storage areas.
Athletic director and head football coach Mike Reed reported that he and his family made it to shelter safely but witnessed shocking damage firsthand. He said, “We are okay. Got to the shelter. Did lots of damage. No more football and baseball stadiums. All equipment, uniforms, etc, are gone. The weight room collapsed and was destroyed, the new gym roof was also ripped off in parts, and the school was damaged.”
The district confirmed there were no life-threatening injuries and expressed gratitude for the support from residents and local authorities.
The Longhorns are slated to open their title-defense season on August 28, but do not host their first home game until October 17 against Ranger. But with key facilities in ruins, the district is evaluating options for fall athletics.
