Friday night marked a historic moment for the Walnut Grove Wildcats, who defeated the Arlington Seguin Cougars 42-35 in the first round of the 5A Division II playoffs. The Wildcats entered the postseason riding high after winning their first district championship in their second year as a program. Arlington Seguin, making a strong return to the playoffs, came ready to fight, resulting in an electrifying contest.
Seguin came out firing, jumping to an early 14-0 lead, but Walnut Grove displayed remarkable resilience. The Wildcats clawed their way back, tying the game and eventually taking a slim 21-20 lead into halftime after a missed PAT by Seguin and a clutch blocked field goal by Walnut Grove. The first half set the stage for an intense battle, with momentum swinging firmly in Walnut Grove’s favor.
The second half continued the back-and-forth action, with both teams trading scores remaining tied 28-28 in the fourth quarter. Walnut Grove’s offense took over in the final frame, scoring two unanswered touchdowns to put the game out of reach. Seguin’s final drive ended in an interception, sealing the Wildcats’ hard-fought victory. Cam Newton’s incredible performance on the ground—360 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 48 carries—gave Walnut Grove its first-ever playoff win.
Next week, Walnut Grove will face Lubbock-Cooper in the area round. Lubbock-Cooper comes in strong after a dominant 38-14 win over Canutillo. With this victory, Walnut Grove has shown it can rise to the occasion and will look to continue its impressive postseason run.
