After leading a dominant Aledo defense to a state championship in 2016, Billy Mathis is getting an opportunity to lead his own program. Mathis was approved as the next head coach at Weatherford in a special school board meeting on Saturday.

Mathis worked as the solo defensive coordinator under Steve Wood since 2014. This past season, the Bearcats defense held opponents to just over 17 points a game en route to a perfect 16-0 record and the school’s seventh state championship.
Mathis leaves his alma mater to take his first head coaching job. He told The Community News on Saturday, “I love Aledo. But this opportunity came up, and it was an opportunity I could not pass up.”
He now takes over a Kangaroo program that finished 2-8 in 2016 and he will try to take Weatherford back to the postseason for the first time since 2007.
