Week 2 6A Team of the Week: Aldine
6A Team of the Week: Aldine Mustangs
September 13, 2019 was the last time Aldine had tasted victory.
Until Friday night.
The Mustangs held Northbrook to -22 yards rushing in an impressive 17-0 victory that snapped a 35-game losing streak. Heading into Friday, it was the third-longest losing streak in the state.
It was a group effort in the Mustang backfield. Running back Charles Taylor led the way with 71 yards rushing, while quarterback Rory Hernandez also pitched in with 53 yards on the ground.
Aldine’s two touchdowns came on a scoop-and-score by linebacker Carlos Cruz and a six-yard rushing touchdown by Hernandez in the third quarter.
Defensive end Geovany Guzman also had a big night, finishing with three tackles for loss.
With the losing streak over, Aldine will now turn its attention to winning multiple games in the same season for the first time since 2015. There’s certainly a possibility the Mustangs could achieve that feat this Friday as Houston Sam Houston comes to town. The Mustangs narrowly fell to the Tigers 36-30 a year ago.
But regardless of what happens this upcoming Friday, the win over Northbrook is something that Aldine head coach Cirilo Ojeda and his players will never forget.
One of the goals this season was to break the 35 game losing streak and that happened tonight. I’m very proud of our boys. @AthleticsAisd @DeanColbert5 @AldineSports @Matt_Stepp817 @MattMalatesta1 @joeagleason @NateGriffFOX26 pic.twitter.com/vgJTnSzYV1
