1A Team of the Week: Garden City Bearkats
It was an intriguing top 10 1A Division I showdown last Friday as #1 Westbrook looked to stay unbeaten as it hosted #9 Garden City.
Westbrook tried to set the tone early as Cedric Ware scored on a 45-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, but Garden City wasn’t fazed.
The Bearkats recovered three fumbles on the night, while John Lopez paced the team with 105 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Logan Seidenberger did his part as well with 97 passing yards.
Westbrook scored to cut its deficit to 46-42 with five minutes to go, but the Bearkat offense was able to run out the clock and secure a win over the Wildcats for the second year in a row.
The victory snapped Westbrook’s 13-game win streak dating back to last season.

Garden City (4-1) will now have one last non-district game this Friday when it hosts Van Horn, an intriguing rematch against the team that knocked the Bearkats out of the playoffs a year ago.
