5A Team of the Week: Austin Northeast Raiders
It had been a tumultuous couple of weeks for the Northeast football program heading into its game against Travis.
A staph infection outbreak caused the Raiders’ game against LBJ scheduled for Sept. 16 to be postponed and then eventually cancelled.
But when it took the field for the first time in three weeks against Travis, Northeast showed no signs of rust.
The Raiders relied exclusively on their ground game, rushing for 351 yards on the night.
Noah Flemmings led the way with 141 yards and two touchdowns on ten carries, while Amari Joyner added 136 yards and two scores of his own on 16 carries.
That dominant rushing attack led Northeast to a convincing 34-6 victory over Travis, earning its first win of the season in a game where it was a 15-point underdog.
It was a crucial win in District 12-5A Division II play, where the race for the last two playoff spots appears wide open.
Northeast will return to action this Friday against McCallum.
