Week Five 5A Team of the Week: Leander Lions
5A Team of the Week: Leander Lions
It has been 11 years since Leander last made the playoffs. The Lions showed last Friday that they’ll be a threat to snap that drought this season.
Georgetown came to Leander undefeated and a heavy favorite, especially considering it had beaten the Lions 52-21 last season.
The Lions had other ideas, scoring a huge 38-35 victory over the Eagles.
Leander quarterback Logan Mitchell showcased his dual threat ability all night. He threw for 261 yards and also rushed for 102 yards and three scores. The defense played its part too. Caleb Lemere had a scoop-and-score to put Leander up 21-20 late in the third quarter. Then linebacker Tyler Moorman iced the game late on with a pick-six, giving the Lions a 38-28 lead they’d never relinquish.
In the passing game, Mitchell looked the way of Zane Woolridge early and often. He finished with eight catches for 125 yards. Garrett Peitz was right behind him with four receptions for 77 yards.

And in the backfield, it wasn’t just Mitchell racking up the rushing yards. Running back Ke’Marion Gordon found holes to run through all night. He carried the ball 19 times for 144 yards.
Now, the key for Leander will be using this win as a springboard to stay among the top four in an extremely competitive district. Next up, the Lions will face crosstown rival Leander Glenn this Friday at 7:00.
