5A Team of the Week: Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers
Last Friday, for the first time in school history, Corpus Christi Carroll came out on top against powerhouse Calallen. In the sixth meeting between the schools, the Tigers jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead before hanging on for the 27-21 victory.
Quarterback Nick Cantu was doing it all for Carroll on the night. He threw for 232 yards and a touchdown, while adding another 58 yards and a score on the ground. Sophomores Ignacio Arellano and Braylen Swanson were his two favorite targets in the aerial attack. Arellano had five catches for 135 yards and a touchdown, while Swanson finished with five receptions for 76 yards. Robert Muhammad paced the ground game with 63 yards and a touchdown.
The defense did its part too. Kaiden Garcia made himself at home in the Calallen backfield with 11 tackles and three tackles for loss. Cornerback Javohn Flores had a big interception in the second half as Calallen looked to make a comeback.
Such a big win for our program! Congrats, men and coaches!

Carroll will hope to keep the momentum going from this big win with district play just two weeks away as they aim for the first playoff berth in eight years. However, the road ahead isn’t getting any easier for the Tigers. They’ll face another 4A Coastal Bend power this Friday as they host Tuloso-Midway in their final non-district contest.
