Week One 5A Team of the Week: Sherman
5A Team of the Week: Sherman Bearcats
For the first time since 2012, the ax belongs to the maroon and white.
Sherman snapped Denison’s 11-game winning streak in the Battle of the Ax, the longest running rivalry in the state of Texas, with a dominant 31-13 victory last Friday over the Jackets.
A year ago, Sherman fell 42-0 to Denison, and the Bearcats were determined not to have a repeat this year. They hit the ground running as quarterback Caleb Orr connected with Mikah Hunt and Hector Peña for first quarter touchdowns to give them a 14-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
Denison would answer with a touchdown in the second quarter, but a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Kane Bowen in the second quarter and a 77-yard touchdown catch-and run from Hunt on a receiver screen in the fourth propelled the Bearcats to a celebration 12 years in the making.

That victory was also Sherman’s first win in the season opener since 2013.
There’s no time though for the celebration to continue this week. The Bearcats have a short week as they travel to 6A side Prosper Rock Hill on Thursday for their final non-district game.
