6A Team of the Week: Bridgeland Bears
The Lonnie Madison era at Bridgeland began with quite a test. The Bears were 24 point underdogs as they took on #18 Cy-Fair.
It looked like the game was going the way of the favorites as Cy-Fair led 30-21 after three quarters of play. However, the Bears didn’t give up. Bridgeland kicker Santi Torres nailed a field goal with eight minutes to go to make it a one-possession game.
Cy-Fair had a chance to extend its lead back to nine, but the Bobcats missed a field goal with just under four minutes remaining. That left the door open for the Bears and they made the most of it as Mason Simmons caught an 11-yard touchdown from Jett Lewis with just 13 seconds remaining.
Torres’ ensuing extra point sealed Bridgeland’s improbable 31-30 victory.

Its passing attack was strong all night as Simmons finished with six catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns, while Oscar Nnanna added eight catches for 117 yards and a score.
The Bears had 16 returning starters from last year’s team and will hope to keep their momentum going as they aim to improve on their 6-5 record from last season. Next up, Bridgeland will host Katy Tompkins on Saturday Sep. 2 in the second of its three non-district games.
