Week Three 2A Team of the Week: Shelbyville
2A Team of the Week: Shelbyville Dragons
With nine seconds left in its game against Waskom, Shelbyville was looking for a miracle. The Dragons had the ball at the Waskom 40 yard line with the game tied at 48.
Shelbyville head coach Jerred Wallace called a timeout and drew a shot play to the end zone.
The Dragons couldn’t have executed it any better. Quarterback DJ Barnes escaped pressure, launching it downfield to Hunter Harvey, who made an incredible toe-dragging catch at the pylon for the game-winning touchdown.
“Once we saw the signal, the stadium erupted and everyone was celebrating,” Wallace said. “For the homecoming game to end in that fashion with all the people in the stands made that moment even more special. It was the best high school game I have ever been a part of.”
Barnes was prolific all night at quarterback, finishing with 385 passing yards and three touchdowns, while adding another 292 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Harvey had five catches for 123 yards and a touchdown reception that will live long in the memory of Shelbyville fans.
However, it wasn’t just those two making plays. Ronnie Williams had 58 rushing yards and a touchdown while adding five catches for 86 yards and a score in the passing attack. Tanor Doggett was another favorite target of Barnes’, finishing with four catches for 109 yards.
Defensively, Dallas Murry, Carson Coplin, and JD Suell all had nine tackles.
With the 54-48 win, Shelbyville improves to 3-0 on the year. The Dragons will hit the road this Friday to face fellow 3-0 side Mount Enterprise.
