Week Three 3A Team of the Week: McGregor Bulldogs
3A Team of the Week: McGregor Bulldogs
According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, McGregor was a 39-point underdog as it took on 4A side Gatesville last Friday.
Even though the game was closer than expected, Gatesville looked like it was going to come out on top as it led 17-7 midway through the fourth quarter.
However, a one-yard rushing touchdown by McGregor running back Sebastian Torres followed by a successful onside kick meant that suddenly McGregor was right back in the game.
The Bulldogs took full advantage of their onside kick recovery, driving down and scoring yet again as Joseph Arnold found the end zone on a one-yard touchdown run on fourth and goal.
Gatesville gave McGregor a run for its money in the final minute driving down to the red zone, but the Bulldogs held off the Hornets to secure a big 21-17 victory.
And while the McGregor run game scored both touchdowns in the fourth quarter, quarterback Bubba Zacharias also deserves recognition for his 263 yards passing and one touchdown on the night. Jacob Singer led the receiving corps with 159 yards and a touchdown on six catches.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 1-2, matching their season win total from last year. They’ll host Clifton this week before beginning district play with opponents like Franklin, Lorena, and Cameron Yoe all waiting on their upcoming schedule.
